Una Corda String Quartet to perform at Spinet music program, Tuesday
Redlands-based quartet will present works by Mendelssohn and Florence Price at Trinity Episcopal Church on Jan. 21. Spring programs to feature a range of talented musicians and ensembles.
The "Una Corda String Quartet" will be featured when The Spinet music organization invites the public to its program on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m.
Trinity Episcopal Church (4190 S. Fourth St.).
Performing Mendelssohn's Quartet No. 6, Op. 80 will be Charles Yoh and Isabella Showalter, violin; Curtis Rainey, viola; and Andrea Morics, cello.
Yoh is the concertmaster of the Redlands Community Orchestra. In his youth, he was concertmaster of the South Coast Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Orange County High School of the Arts. While at UC Berkeley, he played in the San Francisco Youth Symphony Orchestra and the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. He studied abroad in France at the Université de Grenoble, collaborating with l’Association Musicale Vivaldi. After returning from France, Yoh went to medical school at New York Medical College. There he encouraged his fellow students to continue with music while heading up the NYMC Chamber Music Society.
Isabella Showalter has been playing violin since age four, participating in
youth, college and community orchestras all her life, playing first violin in the
Southern Adventist University Orchestra in Collegedale, Tenn., and serving as interim concertmaster of the Eastern Tennessee Symphony Orchestra. She was a winner of the SAU young artists concerto competition. She has been part of the first violin section of Redlands Community Orchestra since fall 2022, and a member of "Una Corda String Quartet" since January 2023. Her most recent musical pursuit involves exploring Irish and Scottish fiddling.
Rainey grew up playing viola in Colorado, studying with the principal violist of
the Colorado Symphony. He attended Penn State University, where he pursued completely unrelated degrees in Viola Performance and Food Science. His day job is as a food scientist in a flour mill, but by night he keeps busy as principal violist of Coachella Valley Symphony and sometimes subs with the Redlands Symphony.
Morics began playing cello in grade school in the Philadelphia area, moving onto St. Olaf College where she played with the St. Olaf orchestra. There she met her
trumpet-playing husband Steve Morics. They have been battling "brass vs. strings"
ever since. She currently plays with the Redlands Community orchestra and regularly attends the Southern California Chamber Music Workshop.
The quartet will open their program with selections from "Five Folk Songs in
Counterpoint" (Price, Florence).
