Redlands Airport Association
Advocating for aviation and community at Redlands Municipal Airport

Since its founding in 2014, the Redlands Airport Association (RAA) has been a steadfast advocate for aviation safety, community engagement, and the longevity of Redlands Municipal Airport (REI). Organized by local pilots, aviation enthusiasts, and supporters, the RAA works to ensure that Redlands Airport remains a vital asset for the city and the greater aviation community.
A Commitment to Advocacy and Education
As a Chapter of the California Pilots Association (CalPilots) since 2015, the RAA plays a crucial role in advancing public awareness about the importance of general aviation airports. The organization educates residents, pilots, and policymakers about aviation’s contributions to the economy, emergency services, and transportation infrastructure. Through its advocacy efforts, the RAA has been instrumental in keeping pilots informed about airspace changes and has actively supported the push for radar implementation at San Bernardino International Airport to enhance regional flight safety.
Strengthening Community Connections
Beyond its advocacy, the RAA fosters strong community ties through family-friendly events that showcase the airport’s role as a hub for education and service. Annual events such as Redlands Airport Spring Fling, Plane or Treat, and the Stuff a Plane invite residents to engage with aviation up close, support charitable causes, and celebrate the region’s aeronautical history.
Defending the Future of General Aviation
General Aviation (GA) airports across California face increasing pressure from urban development and changing land use policies. The RAA works to protect REI from encroachment and ensure its continued operation. By raising awareness about the importance of preserving local airports, the association advocates for responsible zoning decisions that safeguard aviation access for future generations.
A Critical Resource for Firefighting Efforts
In addition to serving the aviation community, Redlands Municipal Airport plays a vital role in regional wildfire response efforts. REI serves as a base for water assaults during wildfires, providing critical support to firefighting aircraft. This capability was particularly evident during the September 2014 wildfire, where the airport facilitated aerial firefighting operations to combat the blaze.
Supporting Youth Through Aviation
Redlands Municipal Airport is also home to Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Cadet Squadron 411, which relocated to REI from San Bernardino International Airport. The CAP is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, and its Cadet Program introduces young people to aviation, aerospace careers, leadership development, and good character-building experiences. This program is an excellent opportunity for youth interested in aviation to gain hands-on experience and mentorship in the field.
