A special election for the San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District Board Division 2 seat is underway.
The San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District, established in 1932, plays a crucial role in managing local water resources. One of its primary goals is to recharge the Bunker Hill Groundwater Basin in an environmentally and economically responsible way.
The Bunker Hill Basin stores approximately 5 million acre-feet of water. About a fifth is easily accessible and provides water to about 650,000 people in the cities of Redlands, Highland, San Bernardino, Loma Linda, Colton, Rialto, Bloomington, Fontana, Grand Terrace, and Riverside, as well as portions of San Bernardino County.
Since its inception, the SBVWCD has conserved more than 481.74 billion gallons of water by diverting the natural flow of the Santa Ana River and Mill Creek into 71 human-made ponds. This allows the water to collect and seep naturally into the ground, where it can be pumped out for future use. In October 2024, the SBVWCD announced its fourth-highest annual water recharge record of all time: 24 billion gallons.
The nonpartisan race is between incumbent Hillary Jenkins and challenger Mark Falcone. The SBVWCD serves an area totaling 50,000 acres with over 101,000 registered voters.
