More than 30 students from Redlands Unified School District participated in the district’s annual Civics Day on Feb. 6
REDLANDS, Calif. – More than 30 students from Redlands Unified School District participated in the district’s annual Civics Day on Feb. 6, gaining firsthand experience in local government operations and the democratic process.
Students from Citrus Valley High School, Redlands High School, Redlands East Valley High School and Orangewood High School toured district facilities, shadowed education leaders and engaged in a mock school board meeting to debate real-world policy issues.
The day began with a guided tour of district facilities, including the Service Center Warehouse and the Child Nutrition Services central kitchen. Participants sampled potential new menu items, including a chicken ramen dish that was met with positive reviews.
Students then gathered in the Redlands Unified Boardroom, where they met with Superintendent Juan Cabral, members of the Board of Education and the district’s executive cabinet. They later took on leadership roles in a mock board meeting, debating topics such as a districtwide cell phone policy, dress code guidelines and a four-day school week.
“It was insightful to see how board members must weigh different viewpoints, community concerns and financial limitations before making a choice,” said Redlands East Valley High School senior Love Afolabi. “School board meetings are a space where real change can happen, and I want to encourage more students to be aware of how decisions are made.”
The event, organized in partnership with the Optimist Club of Redlands, also included visits to civic and civil service facilities in Redlands and Highland, including fire and police departments. The Optimist Club provided lunch for all participants at the American Legion.
Redlands Unified officials said Civics Day aligns with the district’s mission to foster engaged, responsible citizens and encourage student participation in local governance.
