REDLANDS, Calif. — Karen Burk, an innovation teacher at Victoria Elementary in Redlands, has been named Teacher of the Year by Garner Holt Education through Imagination (ETI).

Why it matters: Burk, with eight years of experience as an innovation teacher, has created a groundbreaking learning environment in the Garner Holt Lab at Victoria Elementary. She develops engaging curriculum, teaches students and collaborates closely with the Garner Holt team.

Details: The recognition came during the organization's annual Fall Kickoff event on September 26, 2024.

"I feel honored that they acknowledge the work that I have done to create a space that was the first of its kind," Burk said. "I am truly grateful they recognize my dedication to turning their vision into reality."

The Redlands Unified School District shared the achievements of their Garner Holt labs at the event, highlighting their receipt of the prestigious CSBA Gold Bell Award in 2023.

Burk's teaching philosophy empowers students to ask questions, explore ideas, imagine possibilities, design projects, create prototypes and iterate on their work. Her commitment to ensuring a quality education for all students who enter the Garner Holt lab has earned her this recognition.

"I often see students surprised by what they accomplish when they complete the task," Burk said. "I provide continuous, constructive feedback and they learn that sometimes, what they think is a mistake, can actually turn into a new way of doing something."

As part of her recognition, Burk will attend a professional development training with the Garner Holt team this year. She will also participate in the California STEAM Symposium and collaborate with other innovation teachers in the district.

Burk's approach aligns with Redlands Unified School District's 2025 goal of Enhanced Learning through Innovation, which promises excellence in education for all students.
