Redlands Police urge safe driving as summer winds down
RPD announces increased patrols and DUI checkpoint, offers comprehensive safety tips for Labor Day weekend travelers
REDLANDS, Calif. – The Redlands Police Department is deploying additional officers on patrol from Aug. 16 through Sept. 2 as part of the national enforcement campaign, "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," to combat impaired driving during the final days of summer and upcoming Labor Day celebrations.
"We want everyone to enjoy their end of summer travels and Labor Day festivities, but it's imperative to do so responsibly," Redlands Police Cpl. Martin Gonzalez said in a press release on Aug. 14. "Driving under the influence not only puts your life at risk but also endangers everyone else on the road. Our goal is to reduce preventable crashes and save lives."
The department is offering safety tips, including planning for a designated driver or alternative transportation when drinking, wearing seatbelts, and being vigilant of pedestrians and bicyclists.
- Plan Ahead: If you know you’ll be drinking, arrange for a designated driver, use a ride-sharing service, taxi or public transportation.
- Buckle Up: Wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself in the event of a crash.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as texting or eating while driving. Keep your focus on the road.
- Follow Speed Limits: Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of crashes
- Watch for Pedestrians and Bicyclists: With more people enjoying outdoor
activities, be extra vigilant and share the road responsibly. - Take Breaks: If you’re traveling long distances, take regular breaks to rest and avoid fatigue.
RPD reminds drivers that impairment isn't limited to alcohol consumption. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and cannabis products can also affect driving ability.
RPD will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Aug. 31 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. the following day at an undisclosed location within the city.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 13,524 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in 2022, equating to one death every 39 minutes.
Redlands police encourage the public to call 911 if they observe someone who appears to be driving while impaired.
