Redlands USD Summer Meal Program serves hundreds of kids daily

State-funded initiative provides free breakfast and lunch at multiple locations throughout Redlands, including the public library

Redlands Unified School District's Summer Meal Program now offers free meals twice weekly at A.K. Smiley Library, expanding access to nutritious food for local children during summer break.

Why it matters: For eight weeks this summer, Redlands USD Child Nutrition Services will provide free breakfast and lunch to all kids aged 18 and under at various locations across Redlands. The program feeds hundreds of children daily at nine locations through the summer.

Details: Families attending the lunch service at A.K. Smiley Library this week came prepared with picnic blankets, enjoying their meals under the shade of trees. The library hosts meal services on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with different menu selections each time.

The district increased meal service at the library due to positive community response and continued partnership with the facility. Josie Perez, nutrition specialist for Redlands Unified, says the program not only ensures children receive meals during summer but also allows parents to see what their kids eat during the school year.

The program operates at various locations, including the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and several schools. Read more about the program and where to get free meals for children this summer here.

NEWS BRIEF

Air quality alter in effect; American Lung Association expert comments on concerning trend

The Southern Coast Air Quality Management District has issued an Air Quality Alert for the South Coast Air Basin and Coachella Valley, highlighting the return of ozone pollution with rising summer temperatures.

Why it matters: Elevated ozone levels can result in poor air quality, particularly in the afternoon and early evening hours. Ozone air pollution can cause respiratory health problems, including trouble breathing, asthma attacks, and lung damage. Children, older adults, and people with asthma or COPD are especially vulnerable.

Details: San Bernardino County residents endure an average of 175 days per year with unhealthy ozone levels, making it the worst in the nation for ozone pollution, according to the American Lung Association.

Read more about what an American Lung Association expert says about the troubling trend of increasing air pollution after years of improvement and how Redlands' air quality compares to other parts of the county here.
