Renovations will improve living conditions to accommodate recruits from multiple genders
REDLANDS, Calif. — The long-awaited remodel of Redlands Fire Station No. 262 will begin on April 15, and to commemorate the occasion, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held that day at 4 p.m.
Why it matters: Remodeling the fire station has been a long-awaited project that promises to elevate the station’s infrastructure to improve operational efficiency and living conditions for fire department personnel.
Details: The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at Fire Station No. 262, which is located at 1690 Garden Street.
To ensure a smooth transition and uninterrupted service, the fire crew from station No. 262 has been temporarily relocated to the Carriage House at 1399 Prospect Drive since April 10. Until construction is complete, the station will be closed to walk-in emergencies.
The remodel of the one-story 3,683 square-foot station, which was built in 1965, was approved this past February. The total project amount is $2.16 million, which includes a 10% contingency.
One of the remodel upgrades includes modernizing restroom and dormitory facilities to accommodate both male and female candidates.
By building a fitness room and six new crew dormitories, there is hope that the fire department will be able to recruit more firefighters from all genders in the future.
The improvements made to personnel living conditions are also intended to help firefights rest and recuperate after demanding operations.
Moving forward: Renovations are expected to be completed within six to nine months.
To celebrate this milestone for the Redlands community, the fire department is encouraging all community members and stakeholders to attend the groundbreaking ceremony at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 15.
