The Endorsements
The Survey: "In their own words"
For this section, Community Forward Redlands asked each candidate the same five questions. These are their responses. Candidates were asked to keep their responses around 100 words. Responses were edited only for grammar or spelling errors. We also made candidates aware that we will make note of any statement that includes factual inaccuracies or conjecture.
Our schools need to be a place of information and support. I would like to hold monthly parent forums and bring the community back to the Redlands Unified School District.
What do you love most about Redlands?
I have lived in Redlands for over 33 years. My husband and I looked for a community that we could raise our five children in and give them the best life possible. We were not disappointed. We raised five beautiful children who attended the Redlands schools. We felt confident our schools cared about the welfare of all of our children and that they were educated in a safe environment. All of our five children are college graduates and I attribute that to the nurturing of our wonderful community. Three of our five children loved Redlands so much they returned to work here and raise their families. This says alot about a community when we have several generations who stay to create a family centered place to live. I have children who teach in Redlands and grandchildren who attend Redlands schools. I love my community and now want to give back by serving on the School Board to continue to have an outstanding educational system.
How do you define the role you’re seeking as a RUSD School Board member?
A RUSD School Board Member needs to have the ability to make decisions that are for the best interest of children. As a Board Member an individual needs to be familiar with the protocols and policies that need to be carried out. Also, a Board Member needs to be able to listen to parents and know what their highest concerns and priorities are. A Board Member should be familiar with curriculum and budgets to spend the money allocated by the state in the most efficient way possible. A Board Member welcomes input and tries to make changes that will create safety on all school campuses.
If elected, what would be your top three priorities as a RUSD School Board member?
First of all, the safety of all children is my highest priority. We need to allocate funds to place resource officers on all middle school campuses. Second of all, my priority is to ensure we hire the most highly qualified teachers that are concerned about academic standards and classroom management. Last, I would like to see all general education students leave at grade level. This gives students the ability to continue to achieve and work toward a successful education.
What skills and experience do you have that you believe would be beneficial to you as a RUSD School Board member?
I feel that I am a highly qualified candidate for RUSD School Board. I am a retired RUSD teacher with over 30 years of experience in education. I have a Master's in education and have taught elementary and high school due to the fact I have two teaching credentials. I believe this makes me valuable because I have knowledge of the curriculum and also understand the culture of Redlands Unified. I have worked with budgets as president of the Redlands Scholarship Foundation where I am proud to say we gave out thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating seniors at the four Redlands high school campuses*. I am currently an adjunct professor at the University of Redlands working with student teachers within the Redlands Unified School District. I am visiting classrooms each week as I monitor student teachers and visually see and hear what teachers at the elementary and high school level feel are their questions and concerns. I believe that I am the right choice for this position.
Editor's Note: There is a fifth public high school in Redlands, The Grove, which is a charter school and not part of Redlands Unified.
If elected, what is your vision for moving our community forward?
I believe that, as an RUSD Board Member, I would like to provide parents with resources. I would like to provide parenting classes teaching parents the art of communication and listening to their child. Our schools need to be a place of information and support. I would like to hold monthly parent forums and bring the community back to the Redlands Unified School District. I would like to tap into our businesses within our community to provide donations to supplement the budget cuts from the state. I would like to have a transparent School Board that listens and provides feedback as we try to understand all questions and concerns. I believe working within the community and unifying the schools as a warm and welcoming place for all families who know their district cares about them and the education of their child. This will elevate our school system to move forward.
