
The University of Redlands has a new leader of its athletic department. She is Nikki Ayers, just named vice president for intercollegiate athletics.
Ayers replaces outgoing athletic director Jeff Martinez, who is retiring.
"I am honored and excited to join the University of Redlands community," Ayers said on the school’s athletic site. “Redlands has a rich history of success, both athletically and academically, and I am eager to work alongside the coaches, staff, and student-athletes to build upon that legacy.”
Ayers was most recently the director of athletics at Juniata College in Huntington, Pennsylvania. Before that, she held leadership positions at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Collges, where she helped in the college winning four national championships.
COONS SIXTH
Citrus Valley High’s Gia Coons finished sixth at 155 pounds in the CIF-State girls wrestling championship meet in Bakersfield last weekend. She lost the fifth-place match to Angelinah De Leon of Santa Clara by forfeit.
BINGAMAN, TOTH SHINE
Ethin Bingaman, a senior transfer from Arrowhead Christian Academy, is excelling on the pitching mound for Corona High’s highly ranked team which has begun the season 4-0. Bingaman is 2-0 with a 0.78 earned run average. Bingaman has struck out 16 and walked two in nine innings.
Meantime, Arrowhead Christian (3-3) is still humming along. Senior Diesel Toth is hitting .412 with four runs batted in.
ACA is at Aquinas at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
THREE BLACKHAWKS HONORED
Three Citrus Valley High cheerleaders have been honored.
Olivia Elgan, Katelyn Chau, and Annabell Crummey all made the traditional competitive cheer All-CIF-Southern Section team.
Citrus Valley’s Sydney Shreve was named the coach of the year.
TERRIERS HOT
The Redlands High baseball team has gotten off to a quick start. The Terriers are 4-2 through six games.
Redlands beat Ramona of Riverside 16-0 on Tuesday. Jonathan Bermudez and Diego Uribe both had two hits. Drew Anderson pitched seven innings and allowed six hits while striking out eight and walking one.
BLACKHAWKS ROLLING
Also off to an impressive start is the Citrus Valley softball team.
The Blackhawks are 7-5 following an 18-4 win against Silverado on Tuesday. Madison Marquez, Monse Matute, and Kamryn Caldwell all had two hits for Citrus Valley. Cali Leverette pitched five innings, allowing six hits and four runs.
